Five Years of Breathtaking Growth
Solar power production is moving forward at an amazing rate. It took decades of innovation and investment to reach the world’s first terawatt of solar capacity in 2022. Once that foundation was laid, the acceleration became unstoppable. The world hit 2 TW just two years later in 2024 and rocketed past the 3 TW mark by early 2026.
The Powerhouses Driving the Transition
This unprecedented momentum is a global team effort, though a few key regions are currently doing the heavy lifting to meet ambitious climate and energy goals:
- China: The undisputed engine of global solar, deploying a massive 382 GW in 2025 alone—representing well over half of all new panels installed worldwide.
- India: Experiencing a spectacular 49% surge in growth, India added 45.7 GW last year, stepping into the number two spot for global solar markets.
- The European Union: Driven by a strong push for energy security, the EU added over 67 GW collectively.
- The United States: Backed by sweeping clean energy investments, the US market remains incredibly strong, adding 43.2 GW.
